Ultimate Packing Guide for Ohio’s Amish Country

People love visiting Ohio Amish Country for its generous splash of nature and return to life’s simpler yet inspiring elements. Whether it’s Millersburg, Sugarcreek, or simple road trips through the back roads, Amish Country offers plenty of vacation home options for the family looking for a wholesome getaway.

We’re talking nature-filled hikes, elegant wineries, historical sites, horse-drawn carriages, buggy rides, and charming bakeries (Coblentz chocolates, anyone?). From festivals to farms and the warm veil of traditional comfort from the Amish community, there is something special about this part of Ohio.

When you are bursting with excitement for your Ohio Amish Country getaway, and your head is spinning, remembering all the things you need to pack can be tricky.

Take a deep breath — whether you’re driving from Cleveland or Columbus or somewhere out of state, we’ll help you prepare. The best part? You’ll feel relieved at all the things you can leave behind since we’ve got you covered at Your Family’s Place vacation home rental.

1. Movie streaming passwords

After eating all those wholesome Amish dishes like mashed potatoes and pot roast, you might want to unwind with a movie.

At every single one of our vacation rentals, you’ll have access to high-speed internet and HD television sets. But if you’re looking for the next season of House of Dragon, you’ll need to pack your HBO password with you. The same thing goes for Netflix and Amazon Prime.

Before you come, make sure to write down all important streaming passwords in a book or on your phone. That way, when the new episode of Yellowstone or Ted Lasso comes out, you’ll be ready to enjoy and watch with your family.

2. Medications

It’s always better to be safe than sorry. So while you can access a drug store with a short drive, why not feel prepared with all your medication needs packed and ready! Items to remember:

  • Regular Medication: If you have any conditions managed by regular medication, stick them somewhere safe, perhaps in your toiletry bag.
  • Emergency Medication: You know your health best, so if you can anticipate any potential emergency, come prepared with emergency medication.
  • Comfort Medications: Lactose intolerant? Dizzy on long road trips? Pack accordingly! The last thing you want is to miss out on creamy ice cream or cheese from Heini’s Cheese Chalet.
  • Allergy Medication: Remember that a trip to a new part of the country (especially a rural area) can bring on novel environmental allergies. Keep some non-drowsy antihistamine pills on hand, just in case you find a new pollen or grass that makes your nose itch!

3. Books

Amish Country, Ohio, offers many attractions for the whole family. But if you’re traveling with a big group, you might prefer some activities to others. So pack a thrilling read for those times when you’re waiting for the next activity or even when you just want to chill out and lounge around our cozy sofas. A new book or your e-reader will be the perfect addition to your packing list.

4. Clothes and Toiletries

Amish Country weather changes with the seasons, but you should aim to pack an array of clothing like:

  • Comfortable and casual clothes: Best for lounging around the house.
  • Athletic clothes: This includes hiking boots, a rain jacket, and a ball cap — great for hiking and strolling through town.
  • Comfortable walking shoes: Boots, sneakers, sandals, or flats, depending on the time of year you visit.
  • One dressy outfit: We always suggest bringing one dressy outfit just in case you decide to go to one of the nice restaurants nearby, like The Venue in New Philadelphia.
  • Toiletries: Don’t forget glasses and contacts, toothbrushes and toothpaste, hair brushes, and deodorants.

Bonus Tip: Consider packing slightly more modest clothing when visiting Amish Country. The Amish and Mennonite communities are traditionally more modest, so reflecting those values in your dress will be seen as respectful.

5. Swimsuits

You will have access to pools, lakes, rivers, and more in Ohio’s Amish Country. Pack a swimsuit to catch some splashes and enjoy the refreshing current if you’re coming in the warmer months.

6. Tupperware

Traveling with family means someone’s always hungry, and Tupperware helps you prepare for those moments. So keep your novel treats and dinner leftovers fresh by packing a Tupperware or two.

7. A Cooler

A cooler is a must for keeping drinks and snacks chilled on a summer day trip. Planning a picnic? Keep your cold cuts fresh and juices ice cold.

8. Your Child’s Teddy Bear or Security Blanket

If you are traveling with children, bring their favorite teddy, security blanket, binky, or whatever it is they need to sleep at night. We pity the parents kept awake an extra three hours because Mr. Fuzzy was left at home.

Sheets

Ever pack a set of sheets on a family trip? If you’re traveling with kids and grandparents, that starts to take up a ton of room.

This time? Don’t worry about folding that fitted sheet because all the beds in our vacation homes have soft, freshly laundered sheets perfectly fitted on our plush beds for you to cocoon in. So cuddle up with our cozy throw blankets but don’t forget to enjoy the rest of the property, too!

Shower and Beach Towels

We can hear your sigh of relief from here! Yet another space-stealer in the suitcase, towels are a pain to pack when traveling with a group.

You’ll find plenty of towels for your entire group to enjoy. Don’t worry about dirtying up white shower towels because we offer both bathroom and beach towels in every rental.

Toilet Paper and Paper Towels

We hear you, momma; you’re itching to stop at the drugstore for a few extra necessities for cleaning and potty time. But rest assured, Your Family’s Place has all of that taken care of.

When you wake up and ready for your morning cup o’ joe, don’t rummage around your car for your mug or try to run to the grocery store for sugar or creamer. We have everything you need right here.

We know that no vacation is complete without a satisfying cup of coffee on a welcoming porch. So you’ll find freshly ground coffee — the good stuff — stocked in our kitchens, along with a coffee machine and French press to channel your inner barista.

Shampoos and Soaps

After a long day out exploring the local wineries or hiking one of the area’s scenic trails, it’s time for a long hot shower! Our updated, renovated bathrooms are fully stocked with shower foams, shampoos, conditioners, and soap bars from quality suppliers. No need to stress about liquid containers exploding in your suitcase!

Traveling with a health-enthusiastic aunt? She can make a protein shake with the blender in the cabinet. Have a bagel lover in your mix? Toasters are found in every rental, along with pots, pans, plates, cutlery, and pretty much everything else you need to eat.
